Shade of Samuel Brief

Objective:
Recreate a classic work of art using any medium available and producing it in a large format for the purpose of displaying it in a community art show.

Strategy/Solution:
The classic I chose to recreate was The Shade of Samuel Appears to Saul by Salvator Rosa created in 1668. I picked this artwork because of my love for biblical narratives and Rosa’s strong interpretive yet accurate depiction of the story itself. The original artwork was an oil painting in color, but I chose to create my version in charcoal. Rosa’s mastery of light, depth, and texture was intimidating to say the least and attempting this made me appreciate his artistic genius even more. Time restraints limited the re-creation of Rosa’s masterpiece to only the right side of his painting.
